District Announcements
4K and 5K Registration Begins January 9
The School District of Pickens County will conduct registration for four-year-old (4K) and five-year-old (5K) kindergarten beginning January 9, 2012.  Children must register at the school in the attendance zone in which they reside and must be registered by their parent/legal guardian.  Registration hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day. Parents are encouraged to register kindergarten students the scheduled dates of January 9 through January 31, 2012.  However, students may be registered at the elementary school in their attendance zone during normal school hours any time before the first day of school begins.

A child who is four years old on or before September 1, 2012 may register for four-year-old kindergarten; however, the child must qualify for the program.  A child who is five years old on or before September 1, 2012 can register for five-year-old kindergarten.

To enroll, a student must reside in Pickens County with his/her parent or legal guardian and provide the following three required documents:
  1. Student’s state-issued birth certificate – not the hospital keepsake copy;
  2. Student’s South Carolina Certificate of Immunization;
  3. Proof of Pickens County residence. A parent or guardian must provide proof of Pickens County residence when a student first enrolls at any school. Acceptable proof of residence is a current electricity, gas, water or cable/satellite bill in the parent/guardian’s name.  The bill must show the service address.
Since 4K programs are funded only for identified four-year old children who have significant readiness deficiencies, students are screened prior to placement.  All elementary schools have 4K programs on site; however, 4K programs for the upcoming school year are contingent on funding.

Welcome to East End Elementary!
News From SDPC About Pickens County Has Talent
Pickens County Has Talent, SDPC’s first county-wide talent show, will be a family-oriented fun event that will showcase the best of the best within Pickens County. Most importantly, 100% of the proceeds will be distributed to the schools for instructional supplies. Auditions, preliminary shows, and the final event will be held at our high schools, but the contest is not only for high school students. It’s open to all SDPC students and to any Pickens County resident. There’s no age limit or entrance fee. We only ask that acts are “G-rated.”
Read the contest details and get involved. Tell everyone possible about the contest. Encourage all the talented people you know to audition. If you have any questions not answered on the PCHT Web page (www.pickens.k12.sc.us; click on Upcoming—Pickens County Has Talent), contact Roy Costner at 864-270-3675 (cell), 864-843-3139 (home), or Roy.Costner@chartercom.com (email). Help to make Pickens County Has Talent a real success!

Information From School District Of Pickens County Concerning Pediculosis (Head Lice)

Winter months can bring about increasing incidences of head lice because children tend to share hats, combs and brushes more often. Lice do not jump, hop, or fly. The only way for head lice to spread is by direct contact of person to person or person to object such as hats combs, brushes, pillows, or other objects that come in contact with hair. To protect the confidentiality of all students the school does not conduct classroom checks for head lice. It is a good general rule for parents to check children’s hair each week for head lice or nits. If you notice your child scratching, especially around the neckline and ears, you may want to check more frequently.

Head lice are usually brown or grayish-white and the size of a small ant. Nits (lice eggs) are shiny, grayish-white and look like dandruff but cannot be flicked off. If one person in the house has head lice or nits, the whole family should be checked. There are over-the-counter treatments for head lice or you may call your physician for advice on treatment.

To avoid the spread of head lice, frequently remind children to not share any objects that come in contact with hair. If your child goes to a sleep over, it is a good practice to send their pillow and remove and wash the pillow case immediately upon returning home. Contrary to belief, head lice are more commonly spread in the home rather than in the school setting.

If your child has head lice, please contact the school nurse for more help.

Angela Watson

SDPC Coordinator of Nursing

Additional Information From The School District of Pickens County:

When a student is determined to have head lice, the parent will be contacted to pick up the student from school. The student may not return to school until he/she is treated with a special shampoo made to kill head lice. Nits (lice eggs) should be removed from the hair to prevent a reoccurrence of the lice. In addition, a second shampoo treatment may be necessary. Parents should be aware that household items such as beds, linens, upholstered furniture, carpet, toys, clothing, hats, hairbrushes, and combs can be infested with head lice and will need to be cleaned to ensure extermination of the lice. Upon return to school, the student will be checked for live lice/nits before the student is permitted to return to the classroom.

The SDPC has a NO NIT rule in an attempt to minimize head lice infestations and to keep children in school. When a student is found with head lice and/or head lice nits, the student will be removed from the regular classroom. The parent will be contacted and asked to come to the school and pick up the child. The parent will be instructed to treat the child for head lice and to remove all nits manually. After performing these tasks, the parent may bring the child to school so he/she can be checked for nits before being allowed to go to class. If the child has not been treated and/or too many nits remain to be removed immediately, the child will be sent home with the parent. The parent will be shown the nits and provided instructions on how to effectively remove them. The child may be admitted to class as soon as the nits are removed.

MAP Testing Begins This Month For Winter Session Testing
MAP (Measures in Academic Progress) tests begin on January 3rd and conclude on January 24th for grades 2-5 and begin on January 25th and end on February 8th  for grades K5 and 1st. These are important tests in Reading, and Math (for all grades) and Language Arts (for Grades 2-5) that measure each child’s instructional level and give us valuable information about the child’s progress to date so that appropriate instructional plans can be made to assist each child. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests are state-aligned computerized adaptive assessments that provide accurate, useful information. Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) are computerized adaptive tests that accurately reflect the instructional level of each student and measure growth over time. Students do not need to do special preparation for the tests. It measures each student's current level of achievement.

MAP tests provide highly accurate results that can be used to identify the skills and concepts individual students have learned, diagnose instructional needs, monitor academic growth over time, make data-driven decisions at the classroom and district levels, and place new students into instructional programs. At the NWEA (Northwest Evaluation Association) site
http://www.nwea.org, it states, "NWEA is a not-for-profit dedicated to empowering educators with accurate, reliable and actionable data so that all kids can live their dream."
"Test items dynamically adjust to a student's performance level, and as a result, test scores are more accurate. The assessment itself is unique in that it adapts to the student's ability, accurately measuring what a child knows and needs to learn. In addition, MAP tests measure academic growth over time, independent of grade level or age. Most importantly, the results educators receive have practical application to teaching and learning.” Your teacher will notify you through their Web site and newsletter of the dates that your child will be taking the MAP test in his or her class. MAP scores will be shared with parents in early October. You are invited to join the teacher for a conference to discuss your child's MAP scores. If you have additional questions, please feel free to contact the school.

Our district Web site also has great information to assist parents during this time of MAP administration. These are sites are:

Everyone had a great time. It was special to be assembled together at the holiday season to share cheer and time together.

East End Receives Excellent On The School Report Card
Each year the South Carolina Education Oversight Committee reports a school's progress and achievement with the release of the School Report Cards. We are thrilled to share with you that East End has achieved an Excellent on the absolute rating score on the school's report card for student achievement and performance on PASS (Palmetto Assessment of State Standards) results from Spring 2011.   East End received a Good rating on the improvement rating for the Spring 2011 PASS results. The absolute performance scores is the actual scores the school received. The improvement rating notes the gain or loss in scores as reflected from the prior year's scores. Our absolute scores were in the Excellent range and our improvement scores were in the Good range. Our students continue to achieve and succeed. We are very pleased with their progress. This is more great news for EEE!

Information About Homebound
Students who are not able to attend school due to an illness that makes them medically unable to be in school are eligible for homebound instruction. Full details about this are noted in our district and school handbooks. Please request homebound paperwork from the school as soon as the absences occur so that your child can be considered for homebound instruction.

Please call us and we can send home homebound paperwork to you either by another child or through the mail. Or, you can come by the school and pick this up from the front office.When you either pick-up or receive the paperwork (if you ask us to send it you), please give this to your child’s doctor to complete requesting homebound instruction so that the child will not be counted absent and will be allowed to have instructional time paid for by the district to make-up for the work missed due to the medical absence.
Questions? Please feel to call the school.
